![]() It was obvious she was much older, but between makeup, filming her next to/behind overly tall items (high counter, grand piano, etc) and using an actual young girl to film shots from behind, they did what they could without using CGI/digital de-aging. On a separate note, I think the filmmakers did the best they could with Isabelle’s stature. I would have preferred if Lena had simply escaped from Saarne, without killing anybody at the beginning, as it would be easier to use her treatment by the Albrights, to explain her transition to villain. This was a bit jarring when you think of it chronologically because she starts as a villain, emotionlessly killing the art teacher, then turns into the sympathetic person of diminutive stature, getting bullied and attacked by her “family”, before turning back into the main villain for the original Orphan film. The first hour was definitely in the vein of the original, but then they turned it into an action-thriller, turning Esther (Lena) into a sympathetic protagonist, where I actually found myself rooting for her. Also it’s just me but I can only go so far with making a murderous psycho woman posing as a girl sympathetic.same issue with don’t breathe 2…it just changes the dynamic.Īlso typical horror character dumb behavior at the beginning… leaving the art teacher alone in a room not checking it and it happens to Have Esther, then she escapes, the most villainous person on your institute and no one checks the cars in the lot, sees trunk open on its own right after this specific woman is on the run and doesn’t run away. If I had complaints it would be given the brother accidentally killed his sister he seemed very not shaken up about it…he sounded way more of a villain that he killed one sister he can kill this one then a guy who made a horrible accident. Esther has to survive, the whole family has to die so that the first film can exist (or she disappears really well at the end).Īnd the twist made it more fun too. It had to do something different…otherwise you know the basic punches. I totally thought she was gonna have to kill that bird at some point cause it was gonna try and snitch or her or something lol. Only things I would have added are maybe more scenes of the son being a psycho and just another clue or two about what happened to the real Esther. Like someone said this one almost made you wanna root for Esther and I started thinking of cool ideas they could do for other films, but then I realized Esther is dead now so everything would have to be a prequel lol which kinda sucks but I think they could do one more film to make a pretty solid "Esther trilogy" if they play it right like with this film. Wasn't ground breaking or anything but I think a lot of people had low expectations with this being a prequel and the actress being noticeably older but tbh between the twist, Isabelle being an underrated actress, and the way they de-aged her and the use of camera angles made it a fun watch. It's a brief moment when the audience can laugh with the creators or acknowledge the little wink and nudge. ![]() The car scene is great for the same reasons imo, and obviously way better but both scenes got a smile out of me. ![]() An adult can go full-in on adult moments. Fuhrman (presumably) never drank before since she was, like, 11, so it'd all just be the director telling her what to do without a full understanding of why an adult would do that in that context. Even if they did do it, it'd be a child pretending to down a bottle of liquor, which I guess is funny to some but different when it's an actual adult posing as a child and we know the character hates having to do so. They were relatively restrained in her "adult" moments given her age. They could've had something like that in the original but it'd hit different, especially because there was no speck of self-aware camp or comedy in it and the reveal is later on. So it's fun to see where they take that advantage and disadvantage without completely ruining the horror/thriller element or immersion the entirety of the film. are in on how ott it is and so is the audience. Okay, so I don't mean "because she can legally drink alcohol." It's because we as an audience know how campy (and daring) it is to use an adult actor in a child's role from a decade ago.
